Although these creatures may seem unappetizing to many, worms have long been served in both food and drink in Vietnam, and can be quite nutritious.
Ragworm or clam worm
Certain provinces in the country are well known for this type of worm, including Hai Duong, Hai Phong, Quang Ninh and Thai Binh.
They are known for being an expensive entree because they can only be caught on days when the tide is high.
The worms are usually served grilled or with sauce or eggs.
Queen bee larvae
Queen bee larvae are said to be very good for "men's health" in Vietnam.
They are usually steeped in alcohol for preservation, and in the past were reserved for the royal family.
The bamboo worm
Bamboo worms are specialty of the people in mountainous and border areas in Thanh Hoa Province.
The worms live in bamboo and, and the people of this region harvest them during the months of September and October, when both the bamboo and the worms are mature.
The host will cook worm with lemon leaf as the main dishes to greet the guests they like.
The "Chit" worm
This is a white worm living in wild-growing "chit" trees among the limestone mountains in the northwest. Local people in this area take pride in the purported health benefits of this dish.
These worms are usually preserved in alcohol, but can also be eaten dried or in rice porridge.
Silkworm larvae
This is the most common type of worm eaten in Vietnam. It is rich in protein, however Vietnamese consumers are usually careful to pick out those that are not tainted by chemicals.
Sea cucumber
Sea cucumbers live under the sand near estuaries. According to traditional medicine, sea cucumbers can cure colds, high blood pressure and are generally good for health.
They are usually served grilled, in hot pot or mixed with shiitake mushrooms.
Northwestern region attracted over 10 million visitors in 2012 thanks to a tourism development cooperation programme by eight provinces.
The figure was released during a conference in Hanoi on April 20 to introduce the provinces’ tourism potential and call for investment.
The eight provinces involved in the programme are Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Son La, Hoa Binh, Phu Tho, Ha Giang, Lai Chau and Dien Bien. The programme aims to reduce poverty in the localities by promoting tourism.
Initiated in 2008, the programme has generated positive results. The number of visitors to the localities has increased. Last year, the figure rose seven percent over the previous year. The programme has improved living conditions for local residents, especially those from ethnic minority groups.
Experts said that the eight northwestern provinces have abundant tourism potential.
Each locality is designing its own tourism promotion projects to attract more investment and creating their own tourism brand names. They have also agreed to support each other to boost development in the region.

The place where these flowers grow has earned the name, "Kingdom of the Do Quyen," Many of the plants baring the flower grow at as high as 2000 - 3000 metres above the sea level. The trees which grow them are often too large for one person to put their arm around the trunk.
Their flowers usually bloom in the early summer.
Some species are under research and are under study for reproduction by the Hoang Lien National Park, which has been recognised as ASEAN Sapa Hertigate Park.

Recordings of bygone days on the streets of Hanoi, including train bells, ancient songs and Ca Tru (ceremonial singing) will resound again for the first time in an event called Hanoi Soundwalk on April 13.

The event is part of the ongoing 2013 Hanoi Sound Stuff Festival, and Locative Audio project taking place in 11 cities around the world including Virginia (US), Avignon ( France ) and Oxford (UK).

As a beautiful uninhabited island, Hon Seo Island in Binh Dinh province is an ideal destination for those who want to explore the sea and island, see colourful pebbles on the beach, cross large rocks, take a dive, go fishing, and enjoy freshly-caught seafood.
Hon Seo Island |
In order to explore Hon Seo, you can use boat services of tourism companies or hire fishing boats from fishermen at Nhon Ly. If starting from Nhon Ly Beach, your boat will pass through the Wind Strait (Eo Gio) to Yen (swallow) Island. It will take you 20 minutes to get to Hon Seo. But if you depart from Quy Nhon port, it will take you more than an hour to get there.
The first impression when you reach the island is clear water. You can see strange coral reefs and colourful fish of different kinds swimming in water. Around the island, there are large and small rocks piled up, and you may want to climb them to view the sea.
One of the most interesting things about this island is a long stretch of colourful pebble stones. Colourful fist-shaped pebbles, eroded by the action of ocean waves over the years, become round and smooth. Beautiful pebbles are so attractive that most visitors want to take them home as pretty souvenirs. Some even bring them home to decorate houses or make a rock-garden.
About 10 metres from the pebble stretch toward the foot of the mountain, there is a huge natural stone cave. The cool atmosphere and its capacity of accommodating hundreds of people make this cave an ideal stop for tourists.
From the top of Hon Seo, you can feel and see the high sky and the wide sea. On the left-hand side of the sea, there are the Phuong Mai Mountains jutting out, while you can see the Wind Strait, Yen Island and long sand dunes far away on the right-hand side.
The combination of the Wind Strait, Yen Island and the Phuong Mai Peninsula looks like a huge pair of arms to embrace the island. You feel fantastic while standing there, breathing cool, fresh air from the sea. Especially, sunrise or sunset is the most beautiful time to go sightseeing in Hon Seo.There is the bánh chưng (square-shaped sticky rice cake) and onion pickles for the Lunar New Year Tet, the bánh trung thu (moon cake) for the Tet Trung Thu (Mid-autumn), and cơm rượu (fermented glutinous rice) for Tet Doan Ngo.
Then there is the Tet Han Thuc (or Cold Food Festival) that falls on the third day of the third lunar month (April 12 this year). For this festival, many Vietnamese families, especially in the north, made the delicious trôi and chay cakes. Not surprisingly, these “cool” dishes are just right for the weather that prevails at festival time.
The Cold Food Festival originated in China. Legend has it that in 654 BC, Chong'er, King of the Jin Dynasty, endured many hardships while he was fleeing warring states with his courtiers. Once, in order to help the king who was tormented by hunger, one of his courtiers, whose name was Jie Zhitui, cut off the flesh from his thigh and offered it to the king for sustenance.
Nineteen years later, Chong'er regained the throne and rewarded the courtiers generously but forgot about Jie Zhitui. Jie Zhitui, however, did not care much about this and took his mother to a remote mountain and lived in peace. The king later remembered Jie Zhitui’s service and invited him to the royal palace but he refused. Chong'er ordered the mountain to be burned down in order to force Zhitui out of hiding.
Unfortunately Zhitui did not give in and the fire killed him and his mother.
Filled with remorse, Chong'er ordered that no fire will be lit for three days every year and people must eat cold food.
In Vietnam, the Cold Food Festival is mostly celebrated in spirit. People light the kitchen stoves, and instead of eating cold food, they cook trôi and chay cakes to offer their ancestors, friends and relatives.
Trôi and chay cakes are both made of glutinous rice flour. The ingredients and the recipe are quite simple. To make the trôi cake, flour is kneaded into balls and stuffed with small pieces of dried treacle, and for the chay cake, flour is kneaded into flat rounds and stuffed with steamed, crushed green beans mixed with sugar and grated coconut.
Both cakes are then boiled in water until they float to the surface. The floating trôi cakes are taken out and immediately dipped in cold water so that they do not stick together.
Trôi cakes are arranged in small round plates and sprinkled with fried sesame. Meanwhile, the chay cakes are placed in small bowls and sprinkled with fried sesame or green beans and served with an amber mixture of boiled kudzu flour, pomelo flower-scented water, and sugar.
Both dishes are soft, sticky, sweet-smelling and most importantly, cool. Whether they are eaten on their own or as dessert after hot or spicy food, they live up to their traditional name, and soothe the palate and the stomach with their cooling effect.
In fact, in Hanoi, trôi and chay cakes nowadays are not only cooked for the Cold Food Festival, but have also become popular breakfast snacks that can be found everyday at many food stalls.
Some of the best places to get trôi and chay cakes in Hanoi are: Pham Bang at 30 Hang Giay Street; Diep Beo at 52 Hang Dieu Street; a stall at 4 Hang Can Street; and another at 250 Bach Mai Street.

Russian tourist arrivals set a new record this month with a tremendous growth of 80.3% year-on-year, whereas tourist arrivals from other markets witness a drop or just a slight increase.
Vietnam has welcomed nearly 587,400 international tourist arrivals in March, up 1.6% over the same period last year, with over 30,600 of them from Russia. Therefore, Russia makes it to the top five visitor-generating markets for Vietnam, together with China (130,000 tourist arrivals), South Korea (67,700), Japan (58,000) and the U.S. (37,000).
In the year to date, the number of Russian tourists coming to Vietnam has reached nearly 85,000, a rise of 50.8% year-on-year, according to the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism.
However, the spectacular growth in Russian tourist arrivals and the modest increase in tourist arrivals from South Korea, China, Indonesia and Thailand do not help brighten the overall picture of the local tourism industry.
With a decline in tourist arrivals from other major markets like Japan, Taiwan and the U.S., the total number of foreign tourists visiting Vietnam in the first three months is only over 1.8 million, down 3.9% year-on-year. In the same period last year, the country achieved a year-on-year growth of 24.5% in international tourist arrivals.
The inbound tourism segment will enter the low season next month. Many tour and hotel operators have gone to international fairs in Germany, France, the U.S. and Russia to prepare for a new tourism season. …
Communications manager of a five-star in HCMC’s District 1 said the sales department of the hotel was working very hard in preparation for the upcoming low season. “This month, our hotel is fully occupied on a couple of days, but the situation seems to be difficult in April,” she said.

The Central Highland province of Lam Dong has been selected to host the first Festival of Vietnam-ASEAN UNESCO Heritage later this year.
The decision was made at a meeting in Hanoi on April 5 with the participation of representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, localities that house UNESCO-recognised heritage, and concerned agencies.
Chairing the meeting, Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyen Thanh Son expressed his hope that the festival will promote cooperation among ASEAN countries, extend its international integration, and honour the values implicit in UNESCO’s recognition of Vietnam’s and ASEAN member nations’ heritage.
The festival, run on a regional ASEAN scale, will last 5–7 days and member nations with alternate hosting duties. Select ASEAN partners may be invited to participate in the future.
The Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT) was assigned to work closely with Lam Dong province to organise this event.
With a rich history and a vibrant cultural diversity, Vietnam boasts 14 of the region’s official UNESCO World Heritage Examples (including 7 tangible and 7 intangible).
UNESCO’s recognition has positively contributed to Vietnam’s socio-economic development and proven especially important to all 14 beneficiary localities.
