A Motorcycle Adventure in the Mountains of Vietnam

 By Joseph Ferris

My Minsk motorcycle
Vietnam is my favorite country. Lots of people “backpack” through Vietnam this way without ever actually strapping on a backpack. Of course, many people enjoy this style of travel and leave Vietnam satisfied, but if you would like to experience a more authentic, friendly and adventure, I suggest choose motorcycle tour through the mountains northern Vietnam.

In the countryside of northern Vietnam the Minsk motorcycles rule the roads. I went to Sapa, Lao Cai, the beautiful French Hill station. Sapa is a popular destination and most backpackers on the train to northern Vietnam will be heading there. Not to be missed are some smaller mountain towns to the east of Sapa. One rainy morning I visited a hillside market located only four miles from the Chinese border. The Minsk can easily handle the rough terrain of northern Vietnam. I swiftly passed by the stuck Land Cruisers and found them still waiting on my return. After spending a few days in the eastern tribal region, I drove to Sapa, and a few days later continued west along the Dien Bien Phu loop road.

The scenery on the trip is amazing. The town of Sapa sits perched on a dramatic mountain valley. A short drive from Sapa is Mt. Fansipan. With an elevation of 3143m, the peak of Mt. Fansipan was shrouded in the clouds as I drove over the pass.

Ethnic Minorities in your way
There are many colorful ethnic minorities living in the mountains along the loop road. In Sapa, the girls from the local ethnic minorities will offer to guide you on hikes to their villages. These girls speak English amazingly well, learned only by listening to the foreign tourists. I never went along on one of their hikes, but it was reported to me to be a great experience. You will encounter many other different ethnic minorities along the way, each with their own style of distinctive and colorful traditional dress. This area of Vietnam is well off the beaten track. As you travel through the mountains you can rest assured that the ethnic minorities will be dressed in their costumes not to satisfy the demands of a mass tourist industry, but because of tradition.

The southern half of the loop journey passes through the more industrialized hinterland of Hanoi. At this point there are more options for how to return to Lao Cai. I chose to go north of Hanoi, throw away the map, and navigate by the sun until I met with the northbound route back to Lao Cai. I reached the mountains south of Lao Cai with only minor trouble, getting lost only a few times, and enduring two days of rain. Although there is not much to see in this area, the people are very friendly.

I stopped frequently to dry off, warm up and drink coffee with the local people. At one rest stop, the owner of the small cafe served me tea and then ran off to fetch her daughter. The daughter was home on vacation from college in Hanoi, and would practice her English by acting as our interpreter. Initially I was not so sure if her husband felt the same. He later appeared dressed in his old NVA militarily jacket. Giving me a hard stare and a stern look he asked me that if being an American, I was afraid that the Vietnamese would kill me. Through his daughter I told him of course not, and that I considered the Vietnamese to be the nicest people I had ever met. He broke out in a big smile and proudly declared, “very good!” The rest of the family also seemed very pleased by my answer and we had a pleasant afternoon of talking, eating fruit, and waiting for the rain to stop.

The entire family rushed out clapping and cheering in disbelief. I assume they had given me up for dead and banked my deposit. That night they fed me, let me take a shower, and arranged my train ticket back to Hanoi. Those two weeks had been amazing, and probably the biggest influence for why I regard Vietnam as my favorite county and I continue to daydream about future trips.

Practical advice for a successful motorcycle adventure

Slippery snacks of Vietnam

Although these creatures may seem unappetizing to many, worms have long been served in both food and drink in Vietnam, and can be quite nutritious.

Ragworm or clam worm

Certain provinces in the country are well known for this type of worm, including Hai Duong, Hai Phong, Quang Ninh and Thai Binh.

They are known for being an expensive entree because they can only be caught on days when the tide is high.

The worms are usually served grilled or with sauce or eggs.

Queen bee larvae

Queen bee larvae are said to be very good for "men's health" in Vietnam.

They are usually steeped in alcohol for preservation, and in the past were reserved for the royal family.

The bamboo worm

Bamboo worms are specialty of the people in mountainous and border areas in Thanh Hoa Province.

The worms live in bamboo and, and the people of this region harvest them during the months of September and October, when both the bamboo and the worms are mature.

The host will cook worm with lemon leaf as the main dishes to greet the guests they like.

The "Chit" worm

This is a white worm living in wild-growing "chit" trees among the limestone mountains in the northwest. Local people in this area take pride in the purported health benefits of this dish.

These worms are usually preserved in alcohol, but can also be eaten dried or in rice porridge.

Silkworm larvae

This is the most common type of worm eaten in Vietnam. It is rich in protein, however Vietnamese consumers are usually careful to pick out those that are not tainted by chemicals.

Northwestern provinces is on the way to promote tourism

Northwestern region attracted over 10 million visitors in 2012 thanks to a tourism development cooperation programme by eight provinces.

The figure was released during a conference in Hanoi on April 20 to introduce the provinces’ tourism potential and call for investment.

The eight provinces involved in the programme are Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Son La, Hoa Binh, Phu Tho, Ha Giang, Lai Chau and Dien Bien. The programme aims to reduce poverty in the localities by promoting tourism.

Initiated in 2008, the programme has generated positive results. The number of visitors to the localities has increased. Last year, the figure rose seven percent over the previous year. The programme has improved living conditions for local residents, especially those from ethnic minority groups.

Experts said that the eight northwestern provinces have abundant tourism potential.

Each locality is designing its own tourism promotion projects to attract more investment and creating their own tourism brand names. They have also agreed to support each other to boost development in the region.

Top Biking Adventures in Vietnam

As a country with every terrain imaginable, Vietnam offers a memorable bicycling adventure for any and all peddlers, regardless of experience or condition. The flat expanse of the  Mekong Delta  grows to rugged mountains in the central expanse and then blends into the widest variety of difficulty  north near Hanoi .

Traffic and Bicycle Laws
Along with standard laws like not causing traffic problems by racing or zigzagging, Vietnam has few laws targeted specifically toward the bicyclist. It is important to remember not to carry cumbersome loads, carry children over age seven with you or ride more than two abreast. No sort of helmet or lighting is required, but bicyclists are not allowed to ride with open umbrellas. One can only guess what happened to make this law.

Common Trips
For those interested in adventure and active trips, there are some routes that will take you through and explore the backcountry while providing some modicum of modern amenities. ACTIVETRAVEL ASIA_one of the travel companies offering cycling tours in Indochina_ is received good reviews of adventure travelers.

Biking Mekong Delta

The easiest of these is around the  Mekong Delta. With a terrain nearly devoid of any rise, these trips are easier, but by no means less scenic, than the others. Traveling through the expanse of rice paddies dotted with the occasional copse of trees, the rider will be joined by children cycling to or from school or women returning from the market. People in the villages will be pleasantly surprised to see a foreigner riding into town and a circuit from Ho Chi Minh to any of the surrounding villages is an easy ride. With the flat terrain and abundance of villages it is easy to take a trip of any length, whether only a day or two weeks, a rider can tour without backtracking.

Biking Mai chau, Hoa Binh province
The northern area allows for more wooded scenery while still allowing for easier trips. For the more adventurous, the northern area provides a greater degree of difficulty through the hills surrounding Hanoi. This trip offers a great opportunity to see the two area of outstanding nature beauty; the North West highlands of  Mai Chau and the limestone mountains of Ninh Binh. Biking is a great way to see this fascinating and visually stunning part of Vietnam, offering both physical activity and the unique opportunity to observe a way of life that has changed little over the centuries. As we ride in Mai Chau we encounter Muong and White Thai minorities and are guests in their traditional stilt houses allowing us to see firsthand how these minority peoples live. In Ninh Binh we explore the beauty of “Halong Bay on the rice fields” on bikes.

Biking Ho Chi Minh trail
A new trip for the adventurous would be along the historical  Ho Chi Minh trail. The so-called Ho Chi Minh Trail is one of the most renowned legends of the American War. The complicated road system winds along the Truong Son Range, which that facilitated movement of soldiers and war supplies from North Vietnam to battlefields in South Vietnam. Now the historic trail is being turned into a highway and hotels and towns are springing up speedily beside it. The route is incredibly beautiful with new mountain views around every corner, very little traffic, and virtually no tourists.

Weather
Weather in Southeast Asia is a big consideration and it is recommended to go from Late September to December or March to late May. The weather in the southern area of Vietnam stays warm and humid averaging 26°C with its rainy season from June to September. BE WARNED: Vietnam sees monsoonal rains starting in June, peaking in August and tapering down in September. This season varies depending on location; Hanoi in the north generally has a rainy season that peaks earlier while Ho Chi Minh City may not see its rains slack until early October. Vietnam, especially central Vietnam, often floods and can hold up a trip for a week before the waters recede.

The hot season will see temperatures averaging 30°C, with the south staying warm all year round and the north seeing winter trends averaging 15°C. Depending on the time of year, it would be advisable to take a jacket to keep off the chill, especially if riding in the highlands, and a hat to protect against the sun.

Other Considerations
Visas must be applied for at least six months prior to entry date. Tourist visas are granted for one month, but may be extended after arrival in Vietnam, and only allow one entry into the country. Tourists must fill out arrival/departure papers and declaration papers, keeping both with the passport at all times. It is also recommended having a few extra passport-size photos with you as local authorities may request these and it is always a good idea to stay on the good side of authorities.

With over two-thirds of its roads unpaved and those paved roads sporting an abundance of potholes, the road conditions almost require a mountain bike.
The lush landscapes and warm hospitality provide anyone with a good  biking tour of Vietnam. Take the time to look around and smell the proverbial “roses”.

Rhododendrons blossom in Hoang Lien Mountains

Tourists to Sapa this at this time have the opportunity to see a number of flowers blossoming, especially Do Quyen, or Rhododendrons.

Scientists have discovered an area of 3,143-metres in the Hoang Lien Mountain Range that has up to 36 types of Do Quyen flowers that grow naturally.

The place where these flowers grow has earned the name, "Kingdom of the Do Quyen," Many of the plants baring the flower grow at as high as 2000 - 3000 metres above the sea level. The trees which grow them are often too large for one person to put their arm around the trunk.

Their flowers usually bloom in the early summer.

Some species are under research and are under study for reproduction by the Hoang Lien National Park, which has been recognised as ASEAN Sapa Hertigate Park.

Exploring Hanoi’s history through past sounds

Recordings of bygone days on the streets of Hanoi, including train bells, ancient songs and Ca Tru (ceremonial singing) will resound again for the first time in an event called Hanoi Soundwalk on April 13.

Participants joining the walk will start from the Hanoi Cathedral and stroll through the old streets of Hang Gai, Hang Vai, and Bat Dan for 60-90 minutes. With the aid of their smart phones and headphones they can choose which parts of the city to discover. As walkers move from one place to the next the sounds they hear will change.

Recordings include people in the past talking about places on the route, a radio broadcast evoking a bygone era, a creaking rickshaw, a train passing or the performance of long-forgotten music.

The event is part of the ongoing 2013 Hanoi Sound Stuff Festival, and Locative Audio project taking place in 11 cities around the world including Virginia (US), Avignon ( France ) and Oxford (UK).

Tri Minh, founder and coordinator of Sound Stuff Festival, said that all recordings and images of the walk will be sent to Barcelona, Spain, the centre of the Locative Audio project.

The sounds once familiar to Hanoians are expected to receive much attention from people, especially the youth, therefore boosting the preservation of cultural values, Minh added.

Pristine Hon Seo Island: ideal destination for explorers

As a beautiful uninhabited island, Hon Seo Island in Binh Dinh province is an ideal destination for those who want to explore the sea and island, see colourful pebbles on the beach, cross large rocks, take a dive, go fishing, and enjoy freshly-caught seafood.

 Hon Seo Island
Located off the Phuong Mai Peninsula in Nhon Ly commune, about 15km northeast of Quy Nhon city, Hon Seo Island is famous for its pristine beauty. Hon Seo, which when seen from the mainland resembles a huge ship sailing to shore, is a wild oasis with feral plants, cliffs, various wild sea creatures and birds.

In order to explore Hon Seo, you can use boat services of tourism companies or hire fishing boats from fishermen at Nhon Ly. If starting from Nhon Ly Beach, your boat will pass through the Wind Strait (Eo Gio) to Yen (swallow) Island. It will take you 20 minutes to get to Hon Seo. But if you depart from Quy Nhon port, it will take you more than an hour to get there.

The first impression when you reach the island is clear water. You can see strange coral reefs and colourful fish of different kinds swimming in water. Around the island, there are large and small rocks piled up, and you may want to climb them to view the sea.

One of the most interesting things about this island is a long stretch of colourful pebble stones. Colourful fist-shaped pebbles, eroded by the action of ocean waves over the years, become round and smooth. Beautiful pebbles are so attractive that most visitors want to take them home as pretty souvenirs. Some even bring them home to decorate houses or make a rock-garden.

About 10 metres from the pebble stretch toward the foot of the mountain, there is a huge natural stone cave. The cool atmosphere and its capacity of accommodating hundreds of people make this cave an ideal stop for tourists.

From the top of Hon Seo, you can feel and see the high sky and the wide sea. On the left-hand side of the sea, there are the Phuong Mai Mountains jutting out, while you can see the Wind Strait, Yen Island and long sand dunes far away on the right-hand side.

The combination of the Wind Strait, Yen Island and the Phuong Mai Peninsula looks like a huge pair of arms to embrace the island. You feel fantastic while standing there, breathing cool, fresh air from the sea. Especially, sunrise or sunset is the most beautiful time to go sightseeing in Hon Seo.

Hon Seo is a wonderful travel spot for adventure tours. You may go camping, rock climbing, sightseeing or fishing, and then cook and enjoy what you just caught. If you want to catch fish, you should go to the island in the morning, prepare some fishing rods and bait. Sometimes, you may catch big fish, if you're lucky.

You can also join local fishermen to experience fishing for eel or big fish, and then cook and eat them as a reward for successful fishing, as the locals usually do.

Cool Tet snacks do the trick

It is a tradition among many Vietnamese families to make trôi and chay cakes to celebrate Tet Han Thuc (or Cold Food Festival), which falls today on the lunar calendar.

Apart from Tet, or Lunar New Year festival, Vietnam celebrates several other Tets. And there are special dishes specific to each one of them.

Trôi and chay cakes, two special snacks made for the Tet Han Thuc, or the Cold Food Festival, have transcended the festival and become popular everyday food in Hanoi

There is the bánh chưng (square-shaped sticky rice cake) and onion pickles for the Lunar New Year Tet, the bánh trung thu (moon cake) for the Tet Trung Thu (Mid-autumn), and cơm rượu (fermented glutinous rice) for Tet Doan Ngo.

Then there is the Tet Han Thuc (or Cold Food Festival) that falls on the third day of the third lunar month (April 12 this year). For this festival, many Vietnamese families, especially in the north, made the delicious trôi and chay cakes. Not surprisingly, these “cool” dishes are just right for the weather that prevails at festival time.

The Cold Food Festival originated in China. Legend has it that in 654 BC, Chong'er, King of the Jin Dynasty, endured many hardships while he was fleeing warring states with his courtiers. Once, in order to help the king who was tormented by hunger, one of his courtiers, whose name was Jie Zhitui, cut off the flesh from his thigh and offered it to the king for sustenance.

Nineteen years later, Chong'er regained the throne and rewarded the courtiers generously but forgot about Jie Zhitui. Jie Zhitui, however, did not care much about this and took his mother to a remote mountain and lived in peace. The king later remembered Jie Zhitui’s service and invited him to the royal palace but he refused. Chong'er ordered the mountain to be burned down in order to force Zhitui out of hiding.

Unfortunately Zhitui did not give in and the fire killed him and his mother.

Filled with remorse, Chong'er ordered that no fire will be lit for three days every year and people must eat cold food.

In Vietnam, the Cold Food Festival is mostly celebrated in spirit. People light the kitchen stoves, and instead of eating cold food, they cook trôi and chay cakes to offer their ancestors, friends and relatives.

Trôi and chay cakes are both made of glutinous rice flour. The ingredients and the recipe are quite simple. To make the trôi cake, flour is kneaded into balls and stuffed with small pieces of dried treacle, and for the chay cake, flour is kneaded into flat rounds and stuffed with steamed, crushed green beans mixed with sugar and grated coconut.

Both cakes are then boiled in water until they float to the surface. The floating trôi cakes are taken out and immediately dipped in cold water so that they do not stick together.

Trôi cakes are arranged in small round plates and sprinkled with fried sesame. Meanwhile, the chay cakes are placed in small bowls and sprinkled with fried sesame or green beans and served with an amber mixture of boiled kudzu flour, pomelo flower-scented water, and sugar.

Both dishes are soft, sticky, sweet-smelling and most importantly, cool. Whether they are eaten on their own or as dessert after hot or spicy food, they live up to their traditional name, and soothe the palate and the stomach with their cooling effect.

In fact, in Hanoi, trôi and chay cakes nowadays are not only cooked for the Cold Food Festival, but have also become popular breakfast snacks that can be found everyday at many food stalls.

Some of the best places to get trôi and chay cakes in Hanoi are: Pham Bang at 30 Hang Giay Street; Diep Beo at 52 Hang Dieu Street; a stall at 4 Hang Can Street; and another at 250 Bach Mai Street.

Dien Phuong Village, situated near the UNESCO World Heritage My Son Sanctuary on National Highway 1, is home of 30 households who serve the dish.

Le Thi Dinh, an official from Dien Ban's economy department, said the food had been popular for decades.

"The recipe has remained true to its origins since our ancestors began the trade during the previous century, but it only became popular in the 1960s," Dinh said.

Duong Thi Loan, a restaurant owner in the village, said she was the third generation in her family to take up the trade.

"I inherited the recipe from my grandfather and my father. My family hosts tourists and foodlovers, and it's often crowded at weekends," Loan said.

The 40-year-old said she chooses calves that weigh around 30kg for the best veal.

It must be eaten with local salted anchovies, rice paper rolls, slices of green banana and herbs.

The dish and various ethnic minority cultures and crafts from mountainous districts will be showcased at the Quang Nam Heritage Journeys Festival from June 21-23 in a bid to boost tourism in the province.

Russian tourist arrivals hit new record high

Russian tourist arrivals set a new record this month with a tremendous growth of 80.3% year-on-year, whereas tourist arrivals from other markets witness a drop or just a slight increase.

Vietnam has welcomed nearly 587,400 international tourist arrivals in March, up 1.6% over the same period last year, with over 30,600 of them from Russia. Therefore, Russia makes it to the top five visitor-generating markets for Vietnam, together with China (130,000 tourist arrivals), South Korea (67,700), Japan (58,000) and the U.S. (37,000).

In the year to date, the number of Russian tourists coming to Vietnam has reached nearly 85,000, a rise of 50.8% year-on-year, according to the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism.

However, the spectacular growth in Russian tourist arrivals and the modest increase in tourist arrivals from South Korea, China, Indonesia and Thailand do not help brighten the overall picture of the local tourism industry.

With a decline in tourist arrivals from other major markets like Japan, Taiwan and the U.S., the total number of foreign tourists visiting Vietnam in the first three months is only over 1.8 million, down 3.9% year-on-year. In the same period last year, the country achieved a year-on-year growth of 24.5% in international tourist arrivals.

The inbound tourism segment will enter the low season next month. Many tour and hotel operators have gone to international fairs in Germany, France, the U.S. and Russia to prepare for a new tourism season. …

Communications manager of a five-star in HCMC’s District 1 said the sales department of the hotel was working very hard in preparation for the upcoming low season. “This month, our hotel is fully occupied on a couple of days, but the situation seems to be difficult in April,” she said.

Festival honours Vietnam-ASEAN UNESCO Heritage

The Central Highland province of Lam Dong has been selected to host the first Festival of Vietnam-ASEAN UNESCO Heritage later this year.

The decision was made at a meeting in Hanoi on April 5 with the participation of representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, localities that house UNESCO-recognised heritage, and concerned agencies.

Chairing the meeting, Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyen Thanh Son expressed his hope that the festival will promote cooperation among ASEAN countries, extend its international integration, and honour the values implicit in UNESCO’s recognition of Vietnam’s and ASEAN member nations’ heritage.

The festival, run on a regional ASEAN scale, will last 5–7 days and member nations with alternate hosting duties. Select ASEAN partners may be invited to participate in the future.

The Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT) was assigned to work closely with Lam Dong province to organise this event.

With a rich history and a vibrant cultural diversity, Vietnam boasts 14 of the region’s official UNESCO World Heritage Examples (including 7 tangible and 7 intangible).

UNESCO’s recognition has positively contributed to Vietnam’s socio-economic development and proven especially important to all 14 beneficiary localities.

Do Son Sea Tourism Festival 2013

A sea tourism festival will be held in Do Son District of the northern port city of Haiphong from April 28 to May 6.
The festival will serve as the framework for many cultural, sports, and tourism activities, including the Do Son Open tennis tournament, a cycling race, dragon boat racing, and a paragliding performance.

Do Son District will also host a sea fishing competition, inaugurate two pools for children, and organise a trade and tourism fair.

The local administration has improved the quality of tourism services by opening training courses for guides and drawing up plans for security and food hygiene and safety.

Do Son District currently has 135 accommodation facilities totalling 3,474 guest rooms—one four-star hotel, one three-star hotel, six two-star hotels, and 44 restaurants.

Along with Cat Ba, Do Son is one of Haiphong’s most popular destinations for domestic and foreign tourists.

Mai Chau among top ten fresh destinations: agoda.com

Mai Chau, a small town in the northern mountainous province of Hoa Binh, Vietnam was named one of the top ten "fresh" Asian destinations by hotel booking site Agoda.com.

Mai Chau Valley, Hoa Binh, Vietnam
Mai Chau was described as "a semi-isolated village in Vietnam...surrounded by limestone cliffs and green rice paddies, populated largely by members of the ethnic White Thai tribe..." by Agoda.com
The annual list was compiled by Agoda.com's editorial team, who studied booking patterns, read thousands of customer reviews and spoke with local experts.

These destinations all had high growth rates and attracted many foreign travellers as well as increasing amounts of vacationing locals.

Ethnic people in Mai Chau, Hoa Binh, Vietnam
Mai Chau was described as "a semi-isolated village in Vietnam...surrounded by limestone cliffs and green rice paddies, populated largely by members of the ethnic White Thai tribe...Vibrant, verdant green rice paddies surround the town on all sides, and dramatic hills rise up on either side of the valley. The town itself isn't particularly stunning, but it's when one gets out into the countryside or head up into the hills that the breathtaking views get better around every corner. There are also several interesting markets to check out, as well as some nearby caves."

With many foreign tourists, Mai Chau is the interesting ideal for trekking trips or cycling options to discover the natural beauty of the region and exotic culture of minority groups.
